Thoughts: “Funny People” Movie Review

Finally had time to see Judd Apatow’s “Funny People” today. It was not the typical Apatow film despite the usual suspects Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Leslie Mann, etc. The movie was definitely more serious story than straight humor, yet it was still enjoyable. I was expecting more funny moments since the title is “Funny People” and the movie is centered on the stand-up comedy careers of Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen and the relationship they develop. The “funny” scenes were all hilarious for the most part; the “serious” scenes were mostly well done, though at times it seemed like the actors were fighting off laughter, especially Leslie Mann. Each cast member fit perfectly, especially the doctor from the commercials and Rogen’s coworker Chuck, played by RZA of the Wu Tang Clan. Some plot points were left as loose ends; and Eric Bana’s character (Leslie Mann’s wife) was not even in the movie until the last 30 minutes or so.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and was impressed by Adam Sandler’s performance especially. He did an extremely good job throughout the movie and was very believable. Sandler’s performance was much deeper than his other work, as I really felt sympathy for his character’s loneliness.

My Grade: B

I was not a fan of this movie unfortunately, but I did like the RZA cameo.

To each their own Dan. RZA was hilarious though.
