“Youth in Revolt” Movie Review

I went to see Michael Cera’s new movie “Youth in Revolt” tonight (I saw it for free which was cool). I’ve been a big fan of Cera since “Superbad”; that, “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist”, and “Juno” are some of my favorite movies. I like Cera because I can identify with the awkward characters he plays in basically all of his movies. Once again, Michael Cera did not disappoint.

Cera does a great job playing both Nick Twisp and Francois Dillinger. He is extremely funny and awkward as Nick; he is even funnier as the more bad-ass Francois. These two characters play off each other really well and it was funny watching Cera talk to himself when both characters were onscreen at the same time.

Portia Doubleday, who plays Cera’s love interest Sheeni, does a great job too as her character inspires Nick to take on the “supplementary persona” of Francois in order to win her heart.

Basically every other actor was perfectly cast as well. Fred Willard really fit as the weird neighbor; Steve Buscemi fit nicely as Nick’s dad; Justin Long was hilarious as the Sheeni’s stoner brother; and Adhir Kalyan was a nice addition to the movie as Vijay, whom Nick befriends at school. I wish he was in the movie longer but his scenes were funny nonetheless.

The movie was very good overall; it was just funny enough, the soundtrack was good, the lines were well-written, and the plot was good as well. Cera was funny as always, and the onscreen relationship between him and Sheeni was very believable.

“Youth in Revolt” is one of my new favorite movies. I give it a 9/10 rating.
